From head to toe and from the inside out, we are incredible creations. Our bodies contained enough DNA when we were born to stretch from the Sun to Pluto and back 15 times; by now we have over 60,000 miles of blood vessels and up to 100,000,000,000 (one hundred trillion) cells. Millions of biological transactions enable us to seize each and every day.
The Super in the Natural reveals the wonders of our physical selves from new and startling perspectives. Astonishing microscopic photography and illustrations of such images as brain neurons, blood cells and nerve synapses, combine with stunning biological facts on the covers. Snappy, off-beat inside tag lines offer a means to let someone know you’re thinking of them in a fun and intriguing way.
These cards are the brainchild of Rabbi David Wechsler-Azen, of Congregation Beth Shalom in the Sacramento, CA area. Some ten years ago, in the very first issue of the NY Times Science section, Rabbi David read the fact about DNA. The following Saturday he spontaneously mentioned what he’d learned during services just before the blessing for the body. Congregants felt inspired and awakened by the learning, and so he and a friend, Amy SaNogueira, began looking for more information and illustrations each week. Eventually, Wechsler-Azen realized they’d make a great series of greeting cards.
“There are prayers in Judaism thanking G-d for the incredible design and function of our bodies. By pairing these awesome scientific images and biological facts about our bodies, we see the wonders of our physical selves from new and startling perspectives. Whether we look at the world through the eyes of science and/or of spirit, we recognize that connectivity is an inherent quality of our existence and our truest response is amazement, curiosity, and awe.”
The cards can be adapted for any occasion, including Birthdays, Romance, Congratulations, Get Well and Encouragement. Individual cards will be on sale in various locations, and through this website you can purchase box sets of a dozen different cards or of one card style, as well as prints of the photos and other merchandise featuring the images. |
